Wedding Video FAQ
The goal of this FAQ, is to answer some of the most common questions regarding wedding video production. Please feel free to submit additional questions, if you feel they’d be helpful to others.
Why hire a videographer?
A video conveys sights and sounds in a way still pictures cannot. Please note however that it’s not our intention to take the place of a photographer. We recommend having both, and will assist you in choosing one if desired.
How long is the completed DVD?
This varies, as each wedding is unique. Dependent largely on the length of the ceremony, the edited version will typically be approximately 75 to 90 minutes in length on average. Longer formal ceremonies will result in a longer video, and some approach two hours in length.
What cameras do you use?
We use Sony Digital Video cameras. Quite a bit larger than your pocket camcorder, but a good bit smaller than a typical news gathering camera. In fact, these same cameras are often used in the field by broadcasters, when larger cameras are impractical. These same Sony cameras are used in many film and television productions today.
Do you use bright lights?
In short, no. In most conditions, our cameras need no additional lights. In very dark situations, such as a nighttime reception with the lights very low, we do use a small light. It’s no more difficult to look at that a table lamp with a lampshade.
What about sound?
Sound is just as important as the video itself. We use the same type of equipment used in broadcast television. A tiny mic, not much larger than a Tylenol tablet is worn by the groom. It’s so sensitive that only the one mic is needed for the officiant and bride and groom. In addition, we use a “shotgun” mic, as well a special digital recorder. Our clients have paid many compliments regarding the sound quality of our video production.
May I choose my own music for the video?
Music during the ceremony and reception is typically the actual music you’ll hear in your video. You may however choose several selections for the introduction, montage segments, and end titles. Selections may be provided on CD, or via MP3 audio files.
Does the DVD include a chapter selection menu?
Yes, each DVD has a custom scene selection menu, chapter markers are typically placed for the ceremony, first dance, toasts, cake cutting, and so on. The same applies to Blu-Ray discs as well.
Can I copy my wedding DVD?
We do not “copy protect” wedding DVDs, and think it very inappropriate to do so. In fact, we encourage clients to back up their DVDs, especially as the years go by. Keep one in a different location. Your safety deposit box for example.
Are your DVDs compatible with any player?
We use “writable” or “DVD-R” discs, as do all wedding videographers. As these are a newer technology than the original DVD, there are older players that may not be able to play the discs. These players are now about ten years old or more. We’ve not any report of playback problems in several years now.
